A terrifying incident unfolded at an Alberta hotel, leaving nearly a dozen children unwell and requiring emergency medical attention. The incident, which occurred at the Canmore Inn and Suites, has sparked concern and curiosity, with rumors circulating online about the cause.
The town of Canmore, located west of Calgary, witnessed a hazmat response as paramedics and ambulances rushed to the scene. Jennifer Stevenson, a parent whose son Oliver was affected, described the situation as "terrifying."
"It started as a normal pool day, but suddenly Oliver and other children began coughing. The hot tub seemed to trigger it. Soon, most of the kids were vomiting, and we had to get out of there quickly," Stevenson recalled.
In a statement, the Canmore Inn and Suites assured the public of their serious approach to the incident, promising full cooperation with authorities. They refuted claims of cyanide as the cause, stating that their pool systems are professionally managed and monitored by a licensed chemical management company, which is now investigating.
Initial air monitoring by firefighters detected an elevated level of a hazardous substance, suspected to be chlorine, based on the symptoms presented. The hotel emphasized that testing has not indicated any deliberate contamination.
Premier Danielle Smith expressed her condolences and gratitude to the first responders, stating, "My heart goes out to the children and their families. I am thinking of them and hoping for a full recovery."
Ten children were hospitalized in Canmore, with one transferred to the Alberta Children's Hospital in Calgary. Stevenson's son, Oliver, was treated and released.
"The children had to be monitored on oxygen for at least an hour. Oliver was hooked up to an EKG unit to monitor his heart rate, oxygen levels, and breathing," Stevenson explained.
The Canmore Eagles Minor Hockey Association, which was hosting a U-7 tournament in the town, confirmed the involvement of many of the affected children and thanked the emergency responders and healthcare teams for their swift actions.
