It's a sweet and charming work that pays homage to the tradition of films like Local Hero and I Know Where I'm Going! But amidst the accolades, there's a notable absence: the snub of Harris Dickinson's powerful film about homelessness, Urchin, which truly deserved some Bafta recognition. The Bafta nominations also highlight the award season love for Ryan Coogler's Sinners, a thought-provoking vampire film exploring America's black experience, and Josh Safdie's Marty Supreme, a ping-pong comedy featuring Timothée Chalamet. However, the list is missing some notable British films, such as I Swear, which has five nominations and a strong performance from Robert Aramayo, and Pillion, a BDSM comedy adapted from an Adam Mars-Jones novel. The Outstanding British Film category is a tough call, with top-quality entrants like Steve, Die My Love, and H Is for Hawk, but I can't help but hope that Tim Key will be invited to accept his Bafta for The Ballad of Wallis Island, a film that truly embodies the essence of British cinema.
