In an interview with Apple Music's Zane Lowe, guitarist Keith Richards revealed that Watt's enthusiasm and knowledge of the band's history have been instrumental in their renewed productivity.
"I'm glad we met Andrew when we did," Richards said, highlighting Watt's unique understanding of the band's past. "He knows so much about The Stones that I've forgotten. His passion is infectious, and it's a joy to work with him."
This collaboration has resulted in not one, but potentially two albums. "Foreign Tongues" came about because of the extensive work on "Hackney Diamonds," with Richards suggesting it could have been a double album. The band's break between studio albums, which once stretched to eighteen years, is now a thing of the past, with Watt already planning their next move.
The impact of Watt's involvement extends beyond the studio. Ronnie Wood, another Stones guitarist, described the recording sessions as spontaneous and fun, with songs taking shape quickly. "The operative word is spontaneity," Wood explained. "We get a basic idea, and then everyone adds their own twist, as long as it comes back to the original idea, anything goes."
Richards summed up the collaborative spirit, saying, "As long as you're not fighting each other, you're good. It was a blast to make."
While the future is uncertain, with Mick Jagger admitting he thought "Hackney Diamonds" might be their last, Richards is eager to continue. "I'm up for it anytime. I've got songs ready, and I'm sure Mick does too; he never stops."
